Re: Need for Modern Dental and Support Facilities for Head and Neck Cancer Patients at Auckland City Hospital

As some of you know, I am currently undergoing radiation treatment for head and neck cancer at Auckland City Hospital.

One of the most important parts of my care has been the support provided by the Dental Team, Speech-Language Therapists, and Oncology Nurse Specialists. These professionals help patients manage the challenges of treatment, including oral health, swallowing, speech, nutrition, and recovery.

Recently, I became aware that the dental chair used by the specialist dental service has reportedly been out of action for more than a year. The equipment appears to be many decades old, and it raises questions about whether the facilities available to these professionals are meeting the needs of modern cancer care.

The staff continue to provide high-quality care despite these challenges, but they deserve facilities and equipment that allow them to do their jobs safely and effectively.

Today I have written to the Minister of Health asking for investment in modern equipment and appropriate clinical facilities to support the dental team and the wider supportive care services that head and neck cancer patients rely on.

This is not simply about a dental chair. It is about ensuring patients receive the best possible care and ensuring the clinicians who support us have the tools they need to do their work.

At the Head and Neck Cancer Support Network Trust, we know that supportive care can make a significant difference to treatment outcomes and quality of life.

Have you received support from a dental team, speech language therapist, dietitian, oncology nurse specialist, or other supportive care service during your cancer journey? We'd love to hear how these services have helped you.

Together, by sharing our experiences, we can help improve care for future patients.
