In this part of the toolkit, you’ll learn more about the type of cancer your loved one has, how it may develop over time, and how it can affect their daily life. This knowledge can help you understand what they’re going through and feel more confident in your role as a supporter.

Types of Head and Neck Cancer

There are up to 40 different sites and sub-sites of Head and Neck Cancer. If you are looking for information about one in particular, this list provided by Head and Neck Cancer Australia may help you.

Most head and neck cancers and sub-sites are grouped into 10 main types. We suggest you locate the information related to your loved one’s diagnosis. You may want to spend some time on this step of the toolkit.

Feel free to take a break and digest the information. Make a note of any questions you may have and ask your lead clinician at your loved one’s next appointment.

There is a link to the Cancer Society booklet on head and neck cancer in the additional resources. You can download the booklet or ask for a copy from your local Cancer Society.
Some rare cancers are not included on the Head and Neck Cancer Australia site. You will need to ask your Lead Clinican for reputable online sources of information.
